Stuck in a training rut

I have found over the years that it's very easy to get into a rut when it comes to exercise. This means you are getting bored and uninspired to keep exercising. You need to know that this is NORMAL. Even Olympic atheletes get bored with their routine. Of course they are Olympic atheletes because they know what to do when that happens. They change.

Shake your groove thang.

Every 6 weeks or so you should always shake up your routine. This can be ANYTHING from just changing your music to pod casts, changing your weight routine from lifting heavy to lifting light with more reps, or sometimes, believe it or not, STOP working out for a week. When you change up your routine your body is shocked into a new mode of awareness. Your muscles get bored and you metabolism starts to slow. By changing your workout your body says, "WHOA! What the heck is going on? I better get this ass in gear and get back on the wagon." Your muscles will respond and grow stronger and your metabolism will kick start.

Sit. Stay. Good boy.

Staying away from the gym for a week is actually a good thing. It will re-set your brain and your body. You may feel like crap because your not in the gym but you will be amazed at your results when you get back. The following link is about how to over come that rut. It's about running but it actually is good advice for any sport or routine.
Changing your workouts either every 6 weeks or whenever you start to feel bored is the way to staying motivated in and out of the gym.How-to-Break-Through-a-Training-Rut
